Active Berberine

Berberine is a natural compound isolated from plants such as Coptis chinensis and Hydrastis canadensis. It is highly pleiotropic and has multiple pharmacological activities. Recent clinical studies have shown that berberine lowers blood lipids, blood pressure and blood sugar. It is therefore widely used in traditional Chinese medicine as a treatment for diseases such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia and high blood pressure1.

The clinical studies of berberine as a treatment of diabetes, hyperlipidemia and hypertension have reported the following results2:
Berberine has more positive glucose- and HbA1c-level lowering effects as a combined therapy with oral hypoglycemic agents than hypoglycemic agents by themselves.
Berberine has more positive blood lipid-, total cholesterol-, LDL cholesterol-level lowering, and HDL cholesterol-level increasing effects than lipid-lowering drugs alone; even taking berberine by itself gives the best triglycerides-lowering and HDL cholesterol-level- increase results.
As a treatment for hypertension, berberine has shown better results as a combined agent with hypotensive drugs when compared to treatment with such drugs alone.
Other studies conducted with hyperlipidemia patients have suggested that berberine could be used by itself to treat hypercholesterolemia, using a 500 mg dose of dry extract, or as a combined therapy together with statins3.

As a complementary treatment of diabetes Type II 4, 5 and hypertension.
To reduce plasma-triglycerides.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

It is advisable to check any co-medication with other treatments that are metabolised by CYP2D6 and CYP3A4, as berberine has an inhibitory effect, in which case the reduction of the dosage should be considered.

One capsule daily, taken with food.
