Description
Brought to Europe from America by the colonizers, cocoa literally means “food of the gods”, and it was used for centuries by native Americans to increase energy and to improve mood. With over 300 identifiable active components, it is one of the most pleasant and suggestive foods.
The potential benefits of some of its distinctive components, such as theobromine and flavanols, have been investigated. In the case of the latter, a daily dose of 200 mg of flavanols is needed to help maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, thus contributing to normal blood circulation. An intake of only 2.85 g of organic cocoa powder provides such an amount.
The protein content of this cocoa powder is very high, at 27.6 g per 100 g of powder, ie, 31% of its energy contribution, while its fibre content is even higher, totalling 32%. It is also rich in copper, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and zinc, being particularly high in their content, therefore helping in the following ways:
Copper contributes to the maintenance of connective tissue, energy metabolism, transport of iron, is good for nervous and immune systems, hair and skin pigmentation, and for the protection of cells against oxidative damage.
Iron contributes to several normal body functions such as cognitive, energy metabolism, the formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, oxygen transport, the immune system, the cell division process and to reduce tiredness and fatigue.
Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, energy metabolism, the nervous system, as well as electrolyte balance, protein synthesis, maintenance of bones and teeth, cell division, and to reduce tiredness and fatigue.
Potassium contributes to normal functioning of the muscles, and is good for the nervous system and for normal blood pressure.
Phosphorus contributes to energy metabolism, cell membranes, and maintenance of bones and teeth.
